Audition Info

Auditions are open to middle school, high school students, college students and adults

Synopsis: The 2023 cabaret will feature songs by Stephen Sondheim; Sondheim’s mentor, Oscar Hammerstein II; and a number of the composers that Sondheim mentored in turn.

You should audition with a song that you might like to sing from the repertoire listed (downloadable below).  You may use your audition to “sell” your ability to perform a song that mightn’t ordinarily be assigned to you in a full production – we welcome new dramatic interpretations.  We will also ask you to indicate what other songs you’d be interested in or willing to sing, and we may ask you to join in on one or two larger ensemble numbers (not necessarily listed below).  We won’t perform all of the songs listed – in all, we will plan to have about 18 songs, plus opportunities for encores (likely drawn from Godspell Jr. and/or 9 to 5).

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Download the available song list here. Sheet music for these songs is available in this Google folder, and we have a a YouTube playlist of performances of these songs to help you hear how they might sound in a cabaret setting (note: we might not be able to replicate the exact accompaniments you hear on YouTube).  We will perform this year with live musicians:  piano, bass, guitar, and drums.

  2. Complete the Audition Form at the bottom of this page (or on Airtable here).

    • Note ANY and ALL dates/times you have conflicts on your online audition form below.

    • Indicate on your audition form 2-3 songs from the list of available show songs that you would be interested/willing to sing. You may not necessarily get cast in the song that you audition with, and you should expect the possibility receiving a different or multiple songs.  Please check 2-3 songs from the list that you might want to do - but please audition with the one song you really want to do the most.

    • Upload a headshot/digital photo as part of the form.

  3. ACTOR/CREW AGREEMENT. Download, print, sign. Upload completed agreement into form below or bring to your audition.

  4. Sign up for ONE 10-minute audition slot HERE.  You are asked to arrive 10 minutes early to check in.

  5. IF YOU CAN'T MAKE THE AUDITION DATES: We will accept a video audition. Record yourself on your phone - introduce yourself, your song selection, and sing ONE MINUTE of your song.  Upload the video to google drive or icloud and share a link to the video with ValleyMusicalTheatre@gmail.com, or in the audition form below.  Video auditions must be received by September 9 to be considered.

AUDITION TIPS:

  1. We'll provide an accompanist, however, if you would like to bring your own accompanist that would also like to be in the show, please do so. (Note—this is a lightly rehearsed show, both actor and accompanist must be experienced.) You may audition for two songs within one 10-minute audition slot (optional)

  2. If the song is a duet and you want to prepare to sing the song with another actor and audition together you may. Each actor must still fill out their own audition paperwork, but you may sign up for one audition slot.

  3. There is flexibility allowed in casting.  Songs do not necessarily need to be sung by a person of the gender it was originally written for.  What is important is that you choose a song that showcases your vocal range well, and that your acting choices make sense.

  4. Minor students may bring one parent/guardian with you during the audition.

REHEARSALS:

As a cabaret, this show is minimally rehearsed and most rehearsals will be one on one with director/music director. Most rehearsals will be Saturdays and/or Sundays, though there may be some weekday evenings.

We will have a required set-up day, tech and dress rehearsal prior to performance.

Refer to the Actor/Cast Agreement for more information.
